A Legacy of Expertise &
Evolution
The National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) was established on 17 August 2005 by the merger of the Bureau of Research and Mining Participations (BRPM) and the National Office for Research and Petroleum Explorations (ONAREP). Since their inception in 1928 for the BRPM and in 1981 for the ONAREP, these two organizations have been pioneers and leaders in Morocco in their respective fields, and have benefited from a high reputation among international operators.
The National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines created under the name ONHYM is a public institution with legal personality and financial autonomy. The National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines is subject to the State supervision, which is to ensure compliance by the competent bodies of the Office of the provisions of the law 33-01. It is also subject to financial control applicable to public institutions under the State legislation.
our history
Here's How We Got Started
1928
Creation of BRPM
Establishment of the Bureau de Recherches et de Participations Minières (BRPM), marking a key milestone in Morocco’s mining sector. The institution was created to oversee, promote, and develop the country’s mineral resources through structured exploration programs, technical expertise, and strategic partnerships. This initiative laid the foundation for modern geological research and contributed significantly to positioning Morocco as a recognized player in the mining industry.
1950s–1960s
Early national exploration campaigns
Launch of major national geological and mineral exploration campaigns across several regions of Morocco, aimed at identifying strategic resources and strengthening knowledge of the country’s subsoil potential. Extensive mapping, drilling programs, and technical surveys were carried out with growing institutional expertise. These efforts expanded the national resource base and reinforced Morocco’s long-term mining development strategy.
1981
Creation of ONAREP
Creation of the Office National de Recherches et d’Exploitation Pétrolières (ONAREP), dedicated to advancing Morocco’s hydrocarbon exploration and development ambitions. The institution was tasked with managing petroleum research, attracting investment, and promoting offshore and onshore opportunities through modern technical standards. Its establishment marked a new era for the country’s energy sector and international cooperation.
1986–1990s
First international hydrocarbon partnerships
Beginning of major international partnerships with leading energy companies to accelerate hydrocarbon exploration in Morocco’s sedimentary basins and offshore areas. These collaborations introduced advanced technologies, seismic surveys, and drilling expertise while sharing exploration risks. The partnerships significantly enhanced Morocco’s visibility as an emerging destination for oil and gas investment.

2009–2015
Anchois gas discovery and Tendrara project milestones
Progress in key natural gas projects, including the Anchois offshore discovery and major development milestones at Tendrara. These achievements confirmed Morocco’s growing gas potential and attracted renewed investor confidence in the national energy market. They also supported diversification efforts and strengthened prospects for domestic energy security.
2015
Hydrocarbons Code modernization
Modernization of Morocco’s Hydrocarbons Code to enhance competitiveness, transparency, and investor attractiveness in a changing global energy environment. The updated legal framework introduced improved regulatory conditions and reinforced support for exploration and production activities. This reform helped align Morocco with international standards and industry expectations.
2020s
New strategic roadmap and energy transition milestones
Launch of a new strategic roadmap focused on sustainability, innovation, and the energy transition while maintaining momentum in mining and hydrocarbons. ONHYM expanded its priorities toward natural gas, critical minerals, and low-carbon opportunities through forward-looking partnerships. These milestones reflect Morocco’s ambition to build a resilient and diversified energy future.
